Ann-Marie’s Take on Memphis: Friday, June 30

See what Ann-Marie James has been creating during her month in Memphis (and check out the fantastic space that is the Medicine Factory) from 6:00-9:00 pm on Friday, June 30. And don’t forget about the casual after party at Ernestine and Hazel’s!

Wisconsin Oddities

Hello! This is James Clar checking in from the northern lands. This summer has been very well, staying busy. I’ve been travelling a bit and taking lots of pictures so I’d like to use these blog posts to share these images with you.
Most recently Kanae and I went to this large museum of odd collections […]

More on “Mobile” and the Medicine Factory

Ever wonder what sort of impression Memphis makes on, say, a vibrant British artist? That very impression will be displayed at the Medicine Factory when Ann-Marie James opens Mobile - her first U.S. exhibition - on Friday, June 30.
Central to the exhibit will be an amalgam of Polaroids taken during James’ residency in Memphis. Also […]

Some love for Bloggers…

Many thanks to Rick Maynard (aka “Freedonian“) for posting information on Ann-Marie’s show on two local blogs! You can read the information at his site or at The ‘Cue.

More Paris (Now Featuring Artistic Livestock)

John Weeden fournit une autre mise à jour de son séjour à Paris:
“Day two in Paris held bad gallery art in the Rue Louise Weiss, a siting of Rob Storr, and stunning street skylines. After attending gallery openings in the Louise Weiss and Marais districts of Paris, I began to understand why Antoine is tired […]

Spike and the Sasquatch

Lantana resident Ann-Marie James’ husband, Spike Morrall, accepted the challenge of the mighty Sasquatch burger at downtown Memphis’ Big Foot Lodge. Had he defeated the behemoth in less than 60 minutes, he would’ve been the first person representing Memphis to appear on the Lodge’s Hall of Fame.
Alas, despite a valiant effort, Spike was bested by […]

England Vs. America: Spike takes on the Sasquatch

Spike took on the legendary Sasquatch burger tonight at the Big Foot Lodge. He had 60 minutes to consume the four pound monster. Sadly, he was defeated by the burger’s epic bun. He began his feat of endurance at 9:58 local time, and after a valiant effort, conceded defeat 36 minutes later. In his defence, […]

Flavin Should Not Flicker, or, Lantana in Paris

Bonjour, mes amis. Notre directeur de Lantana, John Weeden, a voyagé de Londres à Paris, et partage ses aventures grandes avec nous:
“Bonjour mes copines! Paris is magic even at the most mundane of moments, but with future Lantana Artist-in-Residence Antoine Baralhe as your guide, it is absolutement parfait, veritable. From Gare du Nord where he […]

Best milkshake ever

Today was a very interesting and productive day. Gracie Nesin, a photographer and BFA student at MCA, showed us around Memphis. We saw the now abandoned amusement park, Libertyland, some disturbing McMansions in the suburbs, Liberty Stadium, Leahy’s Trailer Park and Summer Avenue. We had lunch at Memphis’s oldest drugstore, Wiles-Smith on Union, where I […]

A very busy day

Today was a very busy day. This morning I gave an informal lecture about my work to students of the Memphis College of Art’s Summer Camp students at Metz Hall. Spike and I were then taken to lunch by Lantana board member Jeanine Jablonski, the MCA’s President Jeff Nesin and the MCA’s Vice President for […]

Ann-Marie Speaks at Memphis College of Art

Lantana Projects board member Jeanine Jablonski describes Ann-Marie James’ day at Memphis College of Art, and her introduction to the Medicine Factory downtown:
“Ann-Marie James gave a short talk at MCA’s Metz hall today, speaking with a handful of high school students who were attending the art camp at the college. She spoke about her work […]

Musings from London and an Update from Declan Clarke

John Weeden shares more of his overseas exploits, and catches up with former Lantana resident Declan Clarke:
“Hello Everyone,
London is as brilliant as ever. Met art writer Matt Price, formerly of Flash Art and Art Review, currently working for the Serpentine Gallery, for a few pints at the Earl of Lonsdale, Notting Hill. We discussed several […]

Ann-Marie James’ U.S. Debut on June 30

Thrifty

Today Ian took us to the veritable gold mine that are Memphis’ thrift stores. I managed to find two Polaroid cameras from the 1960’s for the princely sum of $15! Then it was back to our apartment for an afternoon spent framing a series of prints.
